We Draw from Real Experience
In 1974, Ms. Shene's younger brother was born with cerebral palsy and
she and her family overcame many obstacles in learning to care for him
each and every day. In 1981, Shene's family was introduced to the
Special Olympics when her brother participated while in elementary school.
After participating all through grade school and high school, her family
came to the realization that there was nothing for him after high school.
They built their own Special Olympics team for children with disabilities
graduating from East Side Union High School District and kept them involved
in sports, socialization, and developing motor skills.
In the more than 35 years that Ms. Shene has been involved with the Special
Olympics, she has volunteered more than 7,000 hours of time to work with
people of various ages. She has coached bowling, basketball, weight training,
floor hockey, soccer, and track and field events. For some of these sports,
she has coached groups of up to 120 children at a time.
