What is cerebral palsy?
Cerebral palsy is a disorder that creates complications with muscle tone, movement, posture and development of the brain. It often occurs before birth. This disorder can also lead to issues with vision, hearing, and speech. In most cases, the disability is caught early in life.

How common is this condition?
Cerebral palsy is one of the most commonly diagnosed congenital complications in children. Almost 2 to 3 children in every 1,000 are diagnosed with cerebral palsy. It is estimated that up to 500,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed and living with complications due to cerebral palsy.

What are the causes of cerebral palsy?
There are a variety of factors that could lead to the complications in brain development that ultimately cause cerebral palsy. Fetal strokes, lack of oxygen during birth or labor, infections in the mother that affect the fetus, random genetic mutations, and traumatic head injuries are some of the most common.

How did my loved one develop cerebral palsy?
Most cerebral palsy cases occur while a child is still in the womb or during the labor and delivery process; however, some cases can develop after birth and occur as a result of a traumatic brain injury. Each person's case is different, and working with a medical professional can help determine the exact cause of cerebral palsy.

How can I tell if my loved one has this condition?
Most parents are the first to determine that a child may have a condition that is affecting normal developmental abilities. Often, the first sign of cerebral palsy is a child's muscle tone and movement. Floppy movements, poor reflexes, and hand reflexes can all help determine if cerebral palsy is affecting a child.

How can cerebral palsy be treated?
Identifying the needs of the individual is probably the biggest step in treating cerebral palsy. Medicine, physical therapy treatments, and rehabilitation have all been known to produce positive effects. As a child ages, braces, school assistants and in-home care may be necessary.

How can it be managed?
Managing cerebral palsy generally requires a team of professionals and family members for around-the-clock service. In severe cases in which an individual cannot help themselves perform normal, daily tasks, an in-home respite caregiver from Quality Respite and Home Care, Inc. may be able to help.

How do I get my loved one the help that he or she needs?
Medical treatment, rehabilitation, and respite care can all provide the highest available quality of life for your loved one. It is important that you work with Quality Respite and Home Care, Inc. to ensure that his or her needs are addressed and met.
